History

Acro Yoga is not new, it is as old as human imagination. Who was the first parent to fly their child on their feet?? That was the day acro yoga was born. Acrobats have grown the practice over the years. Here’s an incomplete timeline from the last century as different individuals and groups form different names around the same common idea:

1904 – Japanese Acrobats filmed on April 29, 1904 by American inventor and scientist Thomas Edison at his New York City studio. This may be the first video of acrobatic partner flying (icarian games). Authenticity from the U. S. Library of Congress.

1938 – Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya: flying a student in some intense backbends.

1985 – Acrosage developed by Benjamin Marantz laying the groundwork for therapeutic flying and numerous flying transitions.

1982 – Contact Yoga was coined by Ken Scott Nateshvar.

2001 – Acro Yoga Montreal was founded by Eugene Poku and Jessie Goldberg after growing the practice since at least 1998.

2004 – AcroYoga® was coined by Jason Nemer and Jenny Sauer-Klein after meeting in late 2003.

2006 – Todd Delaune learns about Acro Yoga at The Hostel in the Forest and brings it home to all his friends, the Atlanta Acro Yoga community is born!
